Zhen Yinglian (真应怜) — “she who truly deserves love”
Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》) is to Chinese literature what War and Peace is to Russia — the great novel of our civilization, read for more than two centuries.
In its pages lives Xiangling (香菱), one of the novel’s most heartbreaking characters. She is born Zhen Yinglian (甄英莲) into a gentle family of Suzhou. But as a child of three, she is kidnapped, sold, and renamed — her true identity erased, her fortune stolen, her fate sealed as a servant girl in a great household.
Yet here is the miracle the novelist gave her: they took her name, they took her freedom, but they could not take her poetry. At night, in the garden where she serves, she teaches herself to write verses — line by line, defying the fate written for her. The name Zhen Yinglian is a pun that means “she who truly deserves love.” The author gave her a name the world kept trying to erase — and made sure the world could never finish the job.
We named our studio after her, because we think hanfu has a similar story.
For more than two thousand years, across seven dynasties — Zhou, Qin, Han, Wei-Jin, Tang, Song, Ming — the robes of China were among the most beautiful clothing ever made: hand-embroidered, architecturally cut, worn with poetry. And then, through centuries of upheaval and change, much of it was set aside. Traditions were interrupted. Craft was scattered. A whole world of sleeves and embroidery nearly went silent — remembered only in paintings and museum glass.
But like Zhen Yinglian, hanfu kept its poetry. It is still here.
